Julie and Kreg Elkins, cherished residents of Tuolumne County, have devoted their lives to our community. They raised their wonderful children, Kameron, Kole, Kaci, and Kai, here. Each of their kids is a proud Summerville High graduate and an active member of our community.

On April 4, 2024, the Elkins family’s world was turned upside down. Kai, a vibrant and healthy 19-year-old student at MJC, suddenly developed severe confusion and slurred speech.

He was rushed to Adventist Health ER and then transferred to UC Davis Medical Center ICU, where he was diagnosed with Acute Hemorrhagic Leukoencephalitis (AHLE), a rare and aggressive autoimmune condition. This condition has caused severe inflammation in his brain and spinal cord.

Kai has spent over 70 days in the ICU, bravely fighting for his life, with his devoted parents by his side every step of the way. He’s our “Miracle Man,” defying the odds daily. Though his journey to recovery is long, we believe in his strength and the incredible power of our supportive community.
