Julie and Kreg Elkins have been integral members of Tuolumne County for years, raising their four children—Kameron, Kole, Kaci, and Kai—right here among us. Their kids, all proud Summerville High graduates, have grown up to be vital parts of our local community.

But on April 4, 2024, their lives took a heartbreaking turn. Kai, their youngest, just 19 years old and a vibrant student at MJC, suddenly experienced severe confusion and slurred speech.

What started as a terrifying moment quickly became a life-threatening emergency. Kai was rushed to the ER at Adventist Health, only to be transferred to UC Davis Medical Center, where doctors discovered he was suffering from Acute Hemorrhagic Leukoencephalitis (AHLE)—an extremely rare and aggressive autoimmune condition that has caused severe inflammation in his brain and spinal cord.

For over 70 days, Kai has been fighting for his life in the ICU, while his parents, Julie and Kreg, have been by his side every step of the way. Kai’s strength and determination have earned him the nickname “Miracle Man,” but his recovery is just beginning, and the road ahead is long and uncertain.
